Crocheted Snowflake Ornament Tutorial

With the holiday season fast approaching, stores will soon be covered in red and green. Before you know it, candy canes will be the candy of choice and trees will be lit up with lights. Pretty presents will appear as snow falls outside (be it real snow or the fake substitute).

For the crafter wanting to make it a "handmade holiday," commercial decorations may not "feel" right. As a nice alternative to store bought ornaments, I've come up with a quick and easy crocheted snowflake you can whip up to decorate your Christmas tree.

Crocheted Snowflake Ornament

You'll need: Any weight of yarn will work. (The thicker the yarn, the bigger the flake.)
The hook corresponding to your yarn type/weight.
Optional: Glue, glitter, sequins, beads... anything you want to decorate your snowflake!

Directions:
Make a slip knot and chain 5. Connect in the round with a single crochet in the first chain.

Make 15 single stitches in loop.

Crochet half-double stitches in each of the 15 single stitches.

Put 1 single stitch into the first half-double stitch
Chain 4.
Put 1 single stitch into the second half-double chain.
Chain 4.
Repeat until you're back to the first double chain. Put 1 single stitch in the first half-double chain where you began to "connect" it all.

In each of the new loops (created by your 4 chains), make 5 single stitches. Do not add any stitches between the loops... just go directly into the next loop.
When you're back at the top, put 1 final single chain in the first loop to "connect" it all together. Leave 6" of yarn to make your hanger.

Adorn with glitter or other embellishment and hang on your tree!
