I'm a huge fan of DIY... HUGE. And my daughter loves playdough... LOVES. So, naturally, the two were bound to meet.
Awhile back I made it my personal mission to discover the perfect playdough recipe. One that wasn't complicated, made quality dough... and doesn't smell like lamp oil (like some generic play dough does).
And, by George, I found it. It only took about 15 minutes from start to finish (not counting cool down time)... and made great feeling (and smelling!) dough. The dough isn't sticky, cleans up easily and comes back to life with a little warm water and kneading. The best part? You can make it in almost any color... and scent!
For your sculpting pleasure, I share the recipe with you!
Ingredients:
- 1 package of unsweetened Kool-Aid or drink mix of choice (this controls the color and scent - you can mix and match half of one packet with half of another to get one-of-a-kind creations!)
- 1/4 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar
- 1 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of water
Combine Kool-Aid, salt, cream of tartar and flour in a medium sauce pan. Stir well. (You can even sift these ingredients together if any of them are clumpy.) Once the dry ingredients are well blended, add water and vegetable oil. Stir together well. This will look like colored glue. Place on medium heat and stir constantly for 3 -5 minutes. This step HAS to be monitored at all times and performed by an adult. It doesn't take long for the play dough to set up while on the heat. Once it starts to pull away from the sides of the pan and gets hard to stir, remove from heat and transfer to a piece of wax paper or bowl.
Store in a storage bag and refrigerate/cool completely before giving to a child.
And that's it! Super easy! Super fun! And completely customizable!
* Edited: To answer a question -- I have made red and orange playdough so far. After prolonged play, neither color stained my daughter's hands. Nor did it stain the carpet. To clean up out of the carpet, I let it dry and "scratched" it up with a butter knife. No color remained. As for staining the table, I doubt it will... but don't hold me to that as I only let her play with it on foil or wax paper.

How cool! Just one question. Does it stain your hands (with the koolaid and all)?
It doesn't. :)
That was actually going to be my question, too. Hands and, more importantly, tables and clothes and other things it might come in contact with. Good to know that it's safe... :o)
Aah, must keep this recipe. The little steppie is too little (18mths) and the big steppie is too big (9yrs).
Also, got your msgs on my blog, thanks! Must see your fairy tattoo...
Thanks for the answer! I'll have to give this stuff a try!
I just tried out your recipe and it is AWESOME. My kids love me right now.
